The Book of Philippians

Philippians is one of Paul's Epistles. Epistles are letters Paul wrote to Christians in the early churches.

The book of Philippians was written to the church that was in the city of Philippi.
Philippi was located in the eastern area of Greece.

Paul had been to Philippi in about the year 49 A.D.  When he got there, the people worshiped the Roman emperors and some of the Egyptian gods. One Sabbath, Paul wanted to worship God so he went out of the city to the river. This is where he met the woman named Lydia. She was Jewish, but after she talked to Paul, she converted to Christianity. Then, all of the people in her household were converted, too.

Later, Paul wrote the letter to the church in Philippi during the time that he was in prison in Rome in about 62 A.D. Paul did not write this letter because there was trouble in Philippi. He wrote it to show his love and caring for them. He also was thanking them for their support.
